The blaze, which was reported at about 12:30 a.m., caused about $400,000 in damage to a home on Prospect Hill Drive.
Authorities said a father, his son and his daugther were asleep when the fire started somewhere near the family room. All three were able to escape. A family dog was also saved.
Officials said the father told his daughter to call 911 and he went back inside in an attempt to put the fire out.
"It was a heroic effort that he put out, but we do not recommend for anybody, once you're out safely, to go back inside a burning house," said Jeff Lynch, spokesman for Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
While no injuries were reported, firefighters had to call twice for backup help to fight the blaze. The home's roof was made of wooden shakes, posing a danger to other nearby residences.
Officials were investigating the cause of the fire.
