The Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) organization has decided to implement penalties for batters who execute dangerous swings, effective from May 12. The new rule, approved by the executive committee following an incident where a home plate umpire was struck directly in the head by a bat, includes warnings and ejections based on the severity of the swing.

Under the new regulation, if a batter’s entire bat makes direct contact with another person during a swing, the batter will be immediately ejected from the game. For less severe cases, the umpire may issue a warning or a standard ejection. The decision was finalized during a meeting involving all 12 NPB clubs.

The move comes after a concerning incident where an umpire was hit in the head by a bat, prompting the league to take swift action to enhance player and official safety. NPB officials stated that the new policy aims to prevent dangerous actions and protect everyone on the field.
