Yuto Nagatomo is putting everything on the line. The veteran left-back, known for his relentless spirit and trademark “soul defense,” made a powerful impression on Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu during the J1 League clash between FC Tokyo and Tokyo Verdy at Ajinomoto Stadium on May 10.

Nagatomo played from the start for the first time since returning from injury, featuring until the 78th minute in the 2–1 defeat. With Moriyasu in the stands for what was effectively the final scouting session before the World Cup squad announcement on May 15, the 39-year-old defender delivered an energetic and determined performance.
“I’ve done my best, and now I just have to leave the rest to fate,” Nagatomo said after the match. “I showed my unique, irreplaceable soul. I believe it reached Moriyasu-san.”

The FC Tokyo star is aiming to become the first Japanese player to feature in five consecutive World Cups. His passionate display included an emotional “Bravo!” cry as he made his intent clear. “I’m going to the World Cup,” he declared. “I have a World Cup-specific engine, and I’m ready to turn it on.”
Nagatomo acknowledged the team’s two conceded goals but remained focused on his personal mission. “I feel responsibility for the goals, but I trust my journey. I have to wait calmly for the decision.”
